Class A & B Operator Requirements

In 2015, the US EPA revised the underground storage tank (UST) regulations. Among many other updates, the new regulations included changes to operator training requirements and training options. Operator requirements are tailored to fit each state, so be sure to check with the state regulating agency for clarification on your exact requirements. A and B Operators should be trained within 30 days of assuming their duties.

Class A operators must be knowledgeable and trained in the following:

  • Spill and overfill prevention
  • Release detection
  • Corrosion protection
  • Emergency response
  • Product and equipment compatibility and demonstration
  • Financial responsibility
  • Notification and storage tank registration
  • Temporary and permanent closure
  • Related reporting, recordkeeping, testing, and inspections
  • Environmental and regulatory consequences of releases
  • Training requirements for Class B and Class C operators

Class B operators must be knowledgeable and trained in the following:

  • Operation and maintenance
  • Spill and overfill prevention
  • Release detection and related reporting
  • Corrosion protection
  • Emergency response
  • Product and equipment compatibility and demonstration
  • Reporting, recordkeeping, testing, and inspections
  • Environmental and regulatory consequences of releases
  • Training requirements for Class C operators
